// Commissioned worksGuided by anecdotes, dreams, and personal sharings from individuals who commission the works, I make art for living spaces and occasions. My works are mainly anchored in ink-based illustrations, with other elements and mediums introduced to provide more fertile spaces for exploration and storytelling. Lectio Fortieth: The Lenten Book Project (biennal, beginning 2018)
Inspired by similar movements around the world where you can purchase "surprise" books, this project gives out 40 carefully selected spiritual reads (lectio fortieth!) to accompany 40 individuals through Lent. Each book is accompanied by a drawing and spiritual quote that are prayerfully pieced together based on the individuals’ needs and movements in the given season. [Read more]

Petrified Time (2015)In a world where production time permeates our lives, this interactive installation manifests as an interaction between the self and other that is mediated by a world of
spectacular images. The displays aimed to use the idea of petrified time to
examine the various “rituals” that we undergo within the context of this
production / capitalist time that we live in, thereby contriving a perpetual present. In
doing so, the intention is for the audiences to be opened to the emptiness that such rituals, images and time
for production denote, ultimately, to wake the spectator up from his
spectacle-induced slumber.[Read more]

Curios (2016)A periodical published by students of Tembusu College consisting of opinion pieces, interviews, pesonal narratives, art features, among others. The 2016 issue focused on “in-betweens” as a way to critically and intimately examine society, community, and human experiences.[Read more]

SG51 - I Will Not Celebrate Singapore (2016)This short video work is a pastiche exploring propagandistic rhetoric, picking apart the signifiers and symbols inherent to the SG50 Jubilee Year Campaign. Beginning with the Greek notion of myth as intricately tied to rhetoric, the video satirizes the occlusion and splicing of various narratives and historical accounts that ultimately interrogate and feed back into the “noble lie”. Launched as an actual campaign accompanied by other on-site elements, other forms of public interest and intervention into urban spaces were, as a result, also attendant to the lifespan and public trawl of this work.

At Home - Meditations on Love

Presented as part of the Singapore Night Festival 2022, this is an intimate, immersive installation created by artist Mariel Chee that invites audiences to reflect on their relationships in the setting of a home in the midst of a pandemic. What has living in such close proximity to each other taught us about ourselves and the nature of love?
I contributed several poetry and prose pieces that were presented in the installation as prompts for reflection.

Tembusu Treehouse - The Singapore Love Story
This article attempts to deconstruct the concept of national identity posited by the film, To Singapore with Love by Tan Pin Pin. By drawing out the language of love used to articulate a longing for Singapore, the film goes beyond its veneer of political agendas (accentuated by its censorship by the IMDA) and expresses what it really means to be Singaporean.

My name is Mary Ann. I write and dabble in creative projects as modes of intimation into our shared lived experiences that can be intuitively understood, as well as discursive explorations on interdisciplinary topics. My work tends towards the subjective and underrepresented, tracing the threads of encounter within tapestries of interpersonal, domestic, faithful and quiet spaces. I am drawn towards projects that resist silos, believing that knowledges and languages have porous boundaries that if we listen closely enough, may reveal to us a fuller sense of ourselves and the world.
